When Forced Office Returns Backfire—FDA’s Telework Reversal

In a bold but telling move, FDA leadership recently rescinded a sweeping return-to-office mandate. The policy had forced thousands of employees back to full-time, in-person work. The result? Mass resignations, high turnover, and deep disruptions to the agency's essential work—including approving life-saving medications and vaccines.
But the story didn’t end there. After internal chaos and significant pushback, the FDA reversed course. Employees are now allowed to telework at least two days per week. Why? Because ignoring employee well-being and flexibility doesn’t just hurt morale—it undermines the entire mission of a federal agency.
What This Means for You
While most federal agencies have broad discretion to set telework policies, that changes when telework is requested as a reasonable accommodation under the Rehabilitation Act.
