Protect Your Federal Job from Schedule F Reclassifications

Recent developments at the Social Security Administration (SSA) should give every federal employee pause. Acting SSA Commissioner Leland Ick has reportedly ordered the reclassification of entire offices—mission support, hearings, communications, even pamphlet writers—into Schedule F or the new "Schedule PC." This isn’t just administrative reshuffling. It’s a shift that could threaten the very foundation of job protections for thousands of federal employees.

Historically, Schedule F was limited to high-level policy-making roles. Now, this classification is expanding to include anyone involved in interpreting or applying guidance—budget analysts, HR professionals, IT staff, and yes, even clerks writing pamphlets. That means you could be next.

What’s Happening, and Why It Matters

The reclassification effort transforms protected positions into at-will employment, removing merit-based civil service protections. In this case, entire divisions like SSA’s hearing operations and mission support may be swept up. It’s estimated that 20% of SSA staff could be affected—GS-7 clerks making $40K included.

This raises serious concerns about the erosion of Title VII merit principles. Courts have already intervened in similar attempts at the VA and USDA, and more lawsuits are on the horizon. But legal processes take time—and your career can’t wait.

Three Immediate Steps to Protect Yourself

  1. Download Your SF-50s and Position Descriptions
Document your employment history and classification while you still can.

  2. Preserve Key Emails
Save any communications related to potential reclassifications, new Schedule F or PC policies, and career transition plans.

  3. Demand Written Rationale
If you’re told your job is being reclassified, request the written policy rationale. This is your right—and a vital first step in challenging the move.
