Federal Probation Terminations: What You Need to Know

Feb 14, 2025

If you’re a probationary federal employee, you may be facing an uncertain and deeply unsettling moment. Reports indicate that numerous probationary employees were let go today, despite prior messaging suggesting that only poor performers would be targeted. This sudden shift is more than frustrating—it’s life-altering.

But let me be clear: this is not about you. It’s not about your work ethic, your performance, or your dedication. This is a policy decision, and while it may feel deeply personal, it is not a reflection of your value.

If You’re on Probation, Here’s What You Need to Do

  1. Stay Focused & Keep Showing Up
If you’re still employed, keep giving your best effort. It’s natural to feel anxious, but disengaging out of fear could only make matters worse. Having backup plans is wise, but don’t let panic drive your decisions.

  2. Know Your Rights
Probationary employees have limited protections, but agencies must provide a reason for termination. Unfortunately, a vague or unfair reason does not always create a legal claim worth pursuing. However, some terminations are illegal, particularly if they involve:

    • Whistleblower Retaliation – If you reported wrongdoing and were targeted.
    • Discrimination – If your termination was based on race, gender, disability, age, or other protected factors.
    • Political Discrimination – If you were let go due to political beliefs or perceived loyalty.

If you have strong evidence of any of these, consider seeking legal guidance. If not, your best course of action may be reaching out to your union for support.

The Emotional Impact: You Are Not Alone

Losing a job—especially due to policy shifts beyond your control—can be devastating. Shock, anger, and fear are all natural reactions. But do not isolate. Seek support, practice self-care, and remember that job loss does not define your worth.

I’ve seen countless federal employees go through this, and I can tell you: you will get through this. It may take time, but you will rebuild. In the meantime, focus on what you can control—your mindset, your next steps, and your well-being.
