Can a President Strip Union Rights? NTEU Pushes Back With a Lawsuit

Imagine this: one day you have collective bargaining rights, and the next, they’re gone—stripped away with the stroke of a presidential pen. That’s not fiction. It’s the stark reality unfolding for hundreds of thousands of federal employees today.

The National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, challenging an executive order that drastically limits union rights at agencies like the IRS, EPA, FCC, and others. These are not national security agencies, yet the justification offered is—national security.

But here’s the twist: these very agencies recently offered a “Deferred Resignation Program” that explicitly excluded national security roles. In other words, the same workforce now labeled as “security sensitive” was, until recently, not considered that at all. The union argues, rightly so, that this appears to be more about making it easier to fire federal workers and punish unions that have pushed back legally on executive actions.

The Bigger Picture for Federal Employees

This executive order doesn’t just threaten unions—it threatens your stability, your career protections, and the working conditions you rely on to serve the public. While courts traditionally defer to the president on national security claims, the outcome of this lawsuit remains uncertain. And that uncertainty is what makes mindfulness and proactive steps essential right now.

Staying Calm, Focused, and Protected

When your rights are under threat, it’s easy to feel helpless or overwhelmed. That’s where mindfulness comes in. Centering yourself, staying informed, and taking practical steps can help you respond—not react—to the chaos around you.
